GREAT PRAYER FESTIVAL (MONLAM CHENMO) GRAND PUJA
What is Monlam Chenmo?
The ‘Monlam Chenmo’ Prayer Festival is one of the largest and grandest religious festival in Tibet, and is traditionally held on the 1st to 15th day of the Losar (Tibetan New Year). The celebration consists of two parts: puja rituals as well as outdoor religious activities. During this occasion, Tibetans honour Buddha Shakyamuni, visit monasteries and make offerings to the sangha. It is a very special time as everyone comes together to make prayers and perform various rituals and traditions. During the Monlam Festival, Buddhists pray and commemorate the miracles of Lord Buddha about 2,500+ years ago in India. The Monlam Chenmo festival was begun by Lama Tsongkhapa (the founder of the Tibetan Gelug tradition), to remember Buddha Shakyamuni and his great activities.
Highlight of Monlam Chenmo:
Prayers are conducted to pacify obstacles, generate conducive conditions for harmony, and also pray for the long life of all holy Teachers and for the flourishing of Buddha’s teachings. The prayers organized are also for merit accumulation, as the first fifteen days of the New Year is also known as the ‘Merit-Multiplying’ period. These prayers are relevant for both the living and deceased too.
